When BYTE turned 20 years old in 2018, we established a Leadership Fund (LF).The LF is $5,000 that youth, 18-25 years old, may apply for until the fund is spent. You can request up to $1,500. This is the second year we’ve granted funds, applications are open for a few more weeks before the end of March. We caught up with Teya Rear to talk about their experience, for any questions call the office, 867 667 7975, or email email@example.com.
Q: Who are you?
My name is Teya Rear, I’m 18-years-old and a young artist. I work with music, the outdoors. I’ve also worked on a few mural projects and would consider myself visual artist. I was born and raised in Whitehorse.
Q: How did you hear about the Leadership Fund?
Lianne Charlie and Renee at the Youth Achievement Centre.
Q: What did you apply for?
Applied for funding to go to the Greater Victoria Art Gallery to attend the opening events for To Talk With Others, an exhibit that included three community art pieces I worked with Lianne Charlie. We then went to the American Studies Association conference in Honolulu, Hawaii, where Lianne was presenting a paper on the art project. The reason why I wanted to go is to meet more people around the world that know about a career in art. I wanted to bring back what I learned to Whitehorse.
Q: Was it difficult to apply?
Not at all, getting my passport was so I could travel to the States but other than that? No.
Q: Is the Leadership Fund important?
It was important for me, it was my first time going to the U.S. It was an incredible opportunity being able to go and definitely had a positive impact on me.
Q: Any recommendations for other youth wanting to apply?
Just apply, you never know where you’re going to go.
Q: How do you think receiving the Leadership Fund has affected you?
Growing up in Whitehorse, I haven’t had access to opportunities like these. A paid trip for experiences like Victoria and Hawaii, to go that far. It was incredibly nice to be there for over a week. Aside from being useful for me, when I got back it inspired a lot of people. Some of whom said they didn’t have such opportunities when they were younger and around my age.
Q: Any recommendations? Would you have us change anything?
No, not really. It’s good. Everything you all do. Like LiT (Leaders-in-Training) in Haines Junction, it is all very well set-up.
Applications for the BYTE Leadership Fund are open till the end of March. More details on our website.
