The Canada Day Skate Comp brought out some of the territory’s best skaters for what’s turned into an annual tradition for the skateboarding community.
BYTE and the Skate For Life Alliance have co-hosted the event for the past two years, but BYTE has been involved in running the Skate Comp for well over a decade. It’s an opportunity to get the skate community together and show off their skills.
This year’s event saw a great turnout, with plenty of contestants and lots of repeat skaters from last year.
Not only did we enjoy great weather and an enthusiastic crowd, we got to see some of the best skateboarding the Yukon has to offer.
This year’s winners for best run in the Open category were:
1) Max Melvin-McNutt
2) Cody Ball
3) Curtis Carlick
Max Melvin-McNutt is a Skate Comp veteran and pro snowboarder who has won the comp in past years. Cody Ball comes all the way from Lower Post, BC to compete every year and won the competition last year. Curtis Carlick is a seasoned skateboarder who also won best trick on the pyramid with an Ollie over the hub with a board on top.
Jerry Miller won best trick on the set with a pop shove-it tail grab and Declan Casey won first place in the under-12 category.
