Every year, rec centres, youth centres, and summer camps in Yukon communities hire young energetic people to run programming. To kick the summer off and help train new staff, the Yukon Government’s Youth Directorate hosts a Youth Leadership Training camp. And BYTE comes along for the fun.
This year, we learned how to foster active living among young people, practiced archery, talked about Digital Citizenship, canoed from Swan Haven to the blue bridge, chatted about justice and safety in the communities, and attempted the Monkido high ropes course at Mount Sima. It was three full days of outdoor fun and leadership activities, and the BYTE team was stoked to be involved.
About 20 youth from six different Yukon communities attended this year’s training. We got to meet the youth leaders who are working in Carcross, Carmacks, Marsh Lake, Watson Lake, Dawson City and Haines Junction this summer and engage them with discussions and activities designed to help them grow into leaders in their summer jobs.
We’re so glad we got to meet and spend time with community youth leaders. Thanks to the Youth Directorate for hosting this great conference, and all the best to everyone taking on a new summer job in their community this year!
