Wow—what a phenomenal weekend! We really didn’t know what to expect when we decided to run Future Routes for a second year, but thanks to the incredible musicians, volunteers, and, of course, audience, we’re excited to call the second annual Future Routes Music Festival a success!
We kicked off the festival with an impromptu set by Rob Dickson, a local up-and-coming singer-songwriter with beautiful songs about places, people, and travel. People came by to visit the community marketplace, grab a bite to eat at the food trucks, and enjoy the music. Then Claire Ness and the Wisecrackers took to the stage and charmed the audience with soulful melodies and a great sense of humour.
Dead Simple never fail to impress, and last Friday night was no exception. They rocked out to a great set followed by Zipline, who also continue to wow audiences with their tight sound.
Internationally acclaimed Sarah MacDougall was a real highlight. Whether she was inviting the audience on stage to howl with her or drawing people through the doors, she was truly captivating and we were lucky to have her play.
Major Funk and the Employment got the crowd up and dancing with their funky beats. They’ve been building their reputation on dance floors around Whitehorse for a while, and set a new precedent at Future Routes.
And finally, The Funk Hunters made the night go off. The Funk Hunters infuse electronic beats with freestyle rap, live saxophone, and classic hits to create dance parties you won’t forget. Whitehorse local Daniel Ashley is a part-time band member, and we were very excited to be able to bring his band to Whitehorse for a Yukon debut. They’re hoping to come back to the Yukon for an even bigger dance party, and well, let’s just say we’d have them back anytime.
We want to give a huge thank you to everyone who came out to Future Routes this year, and to the Yukon College and the Yukon College Student Union for helping to organize the event. Our partnership with the Atlin Arts and Music Festival to run the beer garden was a huge success; collectively, we raised over $1000 to help run the Youth Stage in Atlin in 2015.
What started last year as a celebration of the Yukon College’s and BYTE’s anniversary seems to have turned into an annual tradition. See you next year!
