Sun, skaters, and spectators filled the Second Haven Skate Park this Canada Day for our annual Skate Comp. Not only did we experience great weather for the first year in a while, we saw lots of new faces out on the skate park and had over 20 people register to compete. DJ MK Ultra pumped out beats all afternoon to keep the vibe going, and 86 YounGunz performed a short set that drew in crowds and ended with an impromptu collaboration with Vision Quest.

Cody Ball gives the judges a wave before his next run

This year’s Best Run winner was 24-year-old Cody Ball. He’s been travelling in to Whitehorse from his home in Lower Post to compete in the Skate Comp for years.

“Every year I try to be here. Probably four or five years I’ve come to this,” says Cody.

Cody says the Canada Day Skate Comp is one of the few opportunities he gets to compete at his sport.

“I think this is the only competition I know of,” says Cody. “I hope there’s going to be a lot more.”

Cody says the opportunity to compete and get the whole skate community together is awesome.

“I loved it today: it’s nice out, it’s beautiful…all my friends are skating,” he said.

Cody’s form and technique wowed the judges, but there were plenty of worthy competitors. The results for this year’s Skate Comp are:

Best Run:

First Place: Cody Ball (24)

Second Place: Jeffy Miller (16)

Third Place: tied between Henri Simpson (25) and Curtis Carlick (17)

Best Trick:

Best trick on quarter pipe: Patrick Robinson (22)

Best trick on stairs: Henri Simpson (25)

Best trick on pyramid: Curtis Carlick (17)

A huge shout out to Sandor’s, Boardstiff, The Franchise, Triple J’s for donations and prizes, and a big thanks to the Skate For Life Alliance and BYTE’s Whitehorse Outreach Coordinator Allison Furniss for helping to throw the comp together.

Thank you to everyone who came out, watched, and competed. Hope to see you again next year!
