Wow, what a weekend! We’re still trying to catch up on sleep from last weekend’s Atlin Arts & Music Festival, where BYTE staff spent all day Saturday co-hosting the festival’s first-ever Youth Stage.
On Saturday from 12-6, the Atlin Rec Centre opened its doors to youth musicians. From Dead Simple, The Midnight Sons, and the 86 YounGunz to a beat box mashup between Daniel Ashley and the Brass Knuckle Society, Speed Control, and collaborations between MC Turmoil and Riddz, the Youth Stage featured some of the best young artists in the Yukon today. It was a space for young musicians to show off their skills, for people to gather and dance, and for the festival’s audience to see the talented young musicians we have in the territory.
BYTE’s Whitehorse Outreach Coordinator Allison Furniss wants to see the Youth Stage become an annual tradition.
“The Youth Stage was a great success; we had lots of people come to the youth stage, and we had really great quality performances from the youth bands,” says Allison. “It was a great first year of the Youth Stage and I hope that there are many more years to come.”
We had a free lunch available for those who attended, thanks to the generosity of Bridges Café, as well as water and healthy partying information. Most of all, we were excited to provide another venue for young Yukon musicians and to see the enthusiasm of audiences who came out to see them.
Youth Stage 2015? We sure hope so!
