City councillor nominations, federal debates…it’s been a busy month for politics and BYTE wants to make sure the youth voice doesn’t get lost in all the noise.

Every time there’s an election—be it federal, municipal, or territorial—BYTE runs Yukon Youth Want, a social media campaign that asks young Yukoners to share what’s important to them. It’s easy: participants simply write down an issue they feel passionate about, and we take a picture and post it to BYTE’s Facebook or Instagram.

We’ve been wandering the streets and local hangouts of Whitehorse over the past month asking young people to share their views so we can in turn share them with local politicians.

If you don’t run into us on the streets, you can still participate. Tweet us and use the hashtag #YukonYouthWant to tell us about an issue that matters to you, or post your own photo to Instagram using the same hashtag. You can share your own photo to our Facebook page, stop by the BYTE office to use our whiteboards, or simply send us a tweet or an email with an issue that’s important to you.

We’re also hosting an all-candidates forum on October 7th at Baked Café from 5:30-7pm. We’ll be using some of the feedback we get in Yukon Youth Want to formulate questions for the Yukon’s federal candidates, as well as asking audience members to ask their own questions.

The goal with Yukon Youth Want is to get young people engaged in the political systems that affect them, and to encourage them to vote and make a difference. We’re hoping that young people in the Yukon’s rural communities will also contribute to the campaign so we can share the perspectives of as many young people as we can.

So don’t be shy! Use the hashtag #YukonYouthWant, post a photo to our Facebook page, or tweet a comment to us. Email Kara at communications@yukonyouth.com if you have any questions.
